"A genuinely creative life is an expression of the totality of our experience our finite lives, and all that has created them intersecting the infinite contributions of others, including the astounding creations of nature, the cosmos, and all the unknowable contributions of the unseen worlds." --from The Shoreline of Wonder On Being Creative What gives rise to those precious moments of creative insight? What helps us convert such moments into tangible works that bring meaning to our own lives while enriching the lives of others? What's behind our longing to create and how might we embrace creativity as a way of life? Through a skillful blend of masterful storytelling and probing contemplations, The Shoreline of Wonder takes us on an exploratory journey to discover how creativity permeates every aspect of our lives, and shows us how we can bring it to the forefront of our experience. Drawing upon his experiences as a rock climber, architectural designer, Buddhist, husband, and father, Austin Hill Shaw insightfully explores the dynamic universe in which we live and the uniquely human capacity for authentic creativity. With inspiring examples from scientist Sir Isaac Newton, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and religious studies scholar Huston Smith, The Shoreline of Wonder shows us how to live a fully realized, creative life--whoever we are and whatever we choose to do--and to embrace the necessary challenges of the path as gifts that immeasurably enrich us.

The Shoreline of Wonder On Being Creative The Awakening Creativity Series Austin Hill Shaw 9780985480011 Books

Austin Hill Shaw has articulated beautifully what is so difficult to put into words: the experience of creativity. He defines creativity in a way that is all at once spiritual, philosophical and practical, dividing it into the categories of insight, self-expression and manifestation. He talks a lot about the alternate states of being and doing. What I really particularly loved about this book is how he ties in mindfulness to creativity: "By relaxing into whatever is happening while it's happening, we send out an open and unconditioned invitation to the world. More specifically, by relaxing our self-imposed boundaries, we simultaneously build the lightening rods and aqueducts that invite the creative universe to fill us up." He doesn't dissect creativity into a formulaic neurological cognitive/subconscious trigger-response mechanism of the brain, which I personally find to actually inhibit my creative flow, but instead invites the reader to relax into a part of the self that exists for all of us in mystery, accepting insights, and then taking the gifts of insight and creating them (manifesting them) in the world (self-expression).

The Shoreline of Wonder On Being Creative The Awakening Creativity Series Austin Hill Shaw 9780985480011 Books Reviews

The Shoreline of Wonder is a solid, fluid read that integrates a diverse set of examples in highlighting both the power of the creative path and its relevance to all walks of life. It is clear Austin Shaw himself comes from a thorough and eclectic place of experience as he touches on artistic, scientific, and spiritual ways of understanding, exploring and experiencing creativity. As a writer and musician, this book has vitalized my recent endeavors, while also giving me a new platform to understand my own process of creating. Overall enjoyable, I would say a great read for anyone looking to cultivate their inner creative self (which we all possess!) or even more simply for anyone looking to engage their life in a more fulling way. Kudos.
You will be able to read this wonderful little book in perhaps a couple of hours and deepen your understanding of what creativity is and how to allow more of it in your own life. A beautiful blend of personal experience, philosophy and real-life examples I found the book to be both truly creative and distinct in its style and format. Shaw writes as one would expect of someone who professes to be a lover of beauty - eloquently and delightfully. Coupled with a deep authenticity and honesty and you have a wonderfully nourishing and enlightening book - I highly recommend.
A friend recommended this book. Within the first chapter I knew I had found what I had been looking for. For years... when I thought about all of my instances of insight and inspired creativity... it always seemed that there was a connection between the instances, but I could never identify what the common thread might be.

I have always wanted, of course, to understand my creativity better so that I might embrace it more fully. I thought "If there is a way to increase the amount of inspired moments in my life, then sign me up!"

Having read this book, I understand the foundation and source of these moments much better. And now that I understand it better, I feel like I can get in touch with that source each day if I just spend the time.
An extremely well crafted, in-depth and readable book focusing on the creative process. What is unique about this book is the way the author uses science and earth-based natural history to elaborate on our innate creative process. As a life-long ecologist, naturalist and creative artist myself, I found this approach enriching and validating. Additionally, what makes Shaw's book so enjoyable and readable is his weaving in of his own personal experiences with artists and spiritual teachers, as well as his own personal life and family experiences. Highly recommended.
I loved your book and the disclosure about your interpersonal thinking and relationship with Epiphany, which was really helpful. I also loved when you said that the problem with couples counseling and that a lot of what helped you in your relationship was finding ways to constantly reset the relationship and what was the initial attraction to each other. I thought that was really key in your book and something that would help readers immensely. The whole way of resetting, whether it's by using own spiritual practices or other things that you might bring into the relationship that helps to reset it and helps each partner go into spaces of being able to heal and continue to move forward. I loved how you compared that to the two spirals to your daughter's hair. I just felt the creativity and how your worked it to allow your reader to feel in-the-moment was also brilliant. I also really liked how you related the care of your child and the emerging spirit of your child to be something that was something worth finding for; worth trying to resolve the wounds of the relationship. It reminds me so much that when we pick our soul mates, we actually pick our wound-mates; somebody that completely matches our own wounds. I love your descriptions like "an initiation of sorts, converting me from a died in the wool individual out of myself to be a valued member of the community with whom I interact." I just loved how you were able to describe things so perfectly. Thanks for sharing your books and your thoughts! I hope you, Epiphany, and your new baby are all doing well! I'd love to see you in the park or some small gathering so if you're up for it, let us knows! We'll be away for a lot of August, though.
This is a wonderful exploration of the nature of curiosity. It confronts the myth that some people are not creative, while others are. In beautiful language and with compelling stories, this book lays out a view of how creativity is an inherent part of everyone's being, just waiting to be tapped into.
